Defusing a touchy topic like identity
Diversity and inclusion, and broadly, all issues related to identity, spark passionate debates. Simply appointing a person responsible for these themes can provoke fierce opposition. Why is it so complicated?
Often, those debating hotly over identity issues are not on the same level of exchange: some see it solely as a political topic, while others feel personally affected in their humanity. In this context, reaching an understanding is difficult unless you engage in the following behaviors:
- Find common ground (you knew that), but make sure it’s original (here’s the novelty!).
- Show that you’ve genuinely thought about the topic by presenting both areas of agreement and disagreement with your counterpart, as well as the doubts or questions you still hold. Be as specific as possible to convey your respect for the opposite position.
- Take the time to understand the opposing viewpoint. Do your homework!
- Reassess your expectations: you might not achieve a conclusive result from the first exchange, but keep the dialogue open.
Above all, don’t stew over your arguments alone, waiting for the chance to deliver them like blows!
