I ain’t scared! Three key ways to help you be yourself.
Paul-Henri de Le Rue is a champion Olympic snowboarder, a discipline where competitors have to overcome various obstacles as they race against five other challengers. Not bad at all for someone who has suffered from vertigo! Fear is a part of de Le Rue’s day-to-day existence, but he has learned how to cast off its shackles.
De Le Rue suffered more than his fair share of fear-related setbacks in his career as an athlete: the fear of failure followed by the fear of success after he won his first Olympic medal! Paul-Henri uses these three key ideas to help him:
- Live in the present. Once you’ve identified your strategy and objectives, don’t put things off! You’ll feel less anxious when you roll out your action plan and if you strive to do your best without worrying about the rest. Bin any intrusive thoughts.
- Give yourself permission to think big. Paul-Henri uses this inspiring phrase to get through tough times: “Shoot for the moon! Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.” And it’s a phrase that goes along with what he calls “magical thinking” or his deeper purpose.
- Pin down limiting thoughts that hide in the shadows of motivating thinking. Paul-Henri managed to draw on his resilience to get over a serious accident, but his limiting thoughts also stopped him from reaching his full potential as he gave up his career too early.
Facing your fears is a daily task, but it comes with its own reward: you can truly be yourself!
