Little Find

What kind of perfectionist are you?

Not all perfectionists are alike; the psychologist Katherine Morgan Schafler has identified five different categories. Why is it worth knowing about them? So you can capitalize on the positive energy of perfectionism more effectively and avoid falling into the trap of anxiety, shame or bullying.

Perfectionism is the manifestation of our ability to picture a better reality and the desire to get there. But from time to time, it becomes dysfunctional. If you can identify your perfectionist profile, you’ll find it easier to avoid damaging forms of perfectionism.

  • Although the classic perfectionist is reliable and well-organized, he or she finds it difficult to work with other people: “I’m the only person who knows how to do things properly.”
  • Procrastinator perfectionists get anxious about preparing for things in advance… to the extent that they struggle to swing into action: “I’m waiting for everything to be right”.
  • The messy perfectionist takes on numerous different projects but never manages to wrap things up: “I’m almost there”.
  • Intense perfectionists strive for a perfectly finished product, but sometimes run the risk of burning themselves out – or the people around them. “We’re going to start again until it’s perfect.”
  • The Parisian perfectionist (sic!) wants to be seen as your best friend, the best professional, and the best parent. “How do other people see me?”

Do you recognize yourself? Well, now you know what pitfalls to avoid!
