Little Find

The perfectionist procrastinator

Forget perfectionism and avoid putting it on a pedestal! It comes with numerous downsides: it’s a source of anxiety, a complete brake on taking risks, it makes you get bogged down in details, and, lastly, it limits your potential.

Have you already experienced these negative effects? Do those perfectionist character traits sound familiar? Here are some strategies that might help you:

  • Limit your exposure to social networks that encourage you to compare yourself with others (and feel you are not nearly as good as them).
  • Resist marketing jargon that makes you believe you need such and such a gadget to achieve perfection.
  • Instead of striving for perfection, which, by definition, cannot be achieved, strive for excellence. The latter is stimulating and constructive. It encourages you to do your very best and be satisfied with it!
  • Focus on the process and the technique; these are what you’ll need to improve should you fail, rather than deciding you are intrinsically no good.
  • Share any failure with those you trust; they will help you get perspective and realize it’s not the end of the world.

Steer clear of corporate cultures that value perfectionism – they often lead to burn-out!
