Can your team survive divisions?

The last few years have seen a wealth of divisive subjects, and it’s becoming difficult to skirt sources of conflict in informal discussions. Even the weather isn’t neutral anymore! How can you preserve team unity when conversations feel like a minefield?

While your team’s diversity is invaluable, it’s also problematic in that there’s a greater possibility of heated debate. How can you smooth the way?

  • Prepare the groundwork. Set operating rules, explain them to newcomers and make sure they’re enforced. Create a climate based on psychological safety, where everyone can express themselves as long as they respect others.
  • Make sure that team members know each other well, and talk about their previous experiences and what they do outside work.
  • Don’t avoid controversial topics. Give everyone the chance to express themselves. These discussions are often the right moment to dismantle cognitive biases and become more aware of the complexity of events.
  • And don’t restrict this approach to your team. Wherever possible, try to spread this mindset throughout your organization to help shift the corporate culture. Your behavior influences the way others behave, so play on it.

Topics that are divisive put your team to the test. They’re a good opportunity to capitalize on your team’s diversity.
