<p>Aujourd’hui, quel que soit le marché, le terrain de jeu n’a plus de limites : les nouveaux entrants bousculent les acteurs établis, les positions se retournent en permanence. Or de nombreuses organisations raisonnent encore dans une logique de jeu fini, aux règles fixes et au périmètre figé. Résultat : elles ne tiennent plus la route. Selon une étude de McKinsey de 2018, la durée de vie moyenne d’une firme du S&amp;P 500 était de 90 ans en 1935 contre 14 ans en 2010<sup>1</sup>. Et la chute s’accélère ! <h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Mobilisez autour d’une cause juste</strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Dans un jeu fini le but est limité : gagner pour gagner. Dans un jeu infini, le but est de jouer pour porter une « cause juste », une grande ambition partagée qui se traduise par un gain collectif, de long terme, pour tous les joueurs. C’est :&nbsp;</p>



<p><strong>Une cause « POUR » (</strong>et non pas<strong> </strong>« CONTRE »). Si vous mobilisez facilement vos équipes contre un rival, il est plus pérenne – mais plus ardu – de vous focaliser sur une mission engageante à long terme.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p><strong>Une cause inclusive,</strong> ouverte aux différentes parties prenantes qui souhaitent la rejoindre pour y contribuer.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p><strong>Une cause durable,</strong> définie de manière suffisamment universelle et pérenne pour traverser les changements technologiques et culturels, sans être frappée d’obsolescence. L’industrie musicale aurait dû faire du « partage musical » sa cause juste au lieu de se focaliser sur « vendre des disques » !&nbsp;</p>



<p><strong>Une cause idéaliste </strong>: inatteignable mais motivante.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Selon Sinek, chaque entreprise se doit d’avoir comme gardien de la cause, un CEO qui soit un super CVO (<em>Chief Vision Officer</em>), et non un super DAF ou DG opérationnel. Mike Duke, CEO de Walmart entre 2009 et 2013, a joué une partie finie en se concentrant sur la valeur créée pour les actionnaires. Les cours de l’entreprise sont partis en flèche… avant de chuter ! Doug McMillon, son remplaçant, a recentré sa vision sur les clients : Walmart se porte bien mieux sous sa houlette.&nbsp;</p>

<p>We all want to commit to something, to achieve something that is expressed both through the action itself <em>and</em> over time. But often we come up against a self-built wall: we don’t have an idea, we don’t have the means, we don’t have the time, and, right now, we have low visibility. Duckworth counters all that with a very simple conviction: effort counts for twice as much as talent. And the level of effort you put into a task depends on what she describes as grit, “having the passion to accomplish a particular top-level goal and the perseverance to follow through.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>If Duckworth’s psychology of success arguably at points lacks nuance, she still provides a compelling argument against our well-documented, though unconscious, and seemingly irrational human preference for natural talent over effort. In other words, she provides an inspiring, practical reminder that: “Our potential is one thing. What we do with it is quite another.”&nbsp;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><strong>Determination, the cornerstone of commitment</strong>&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>According to Duckworth, the world’s most extraordinarily high-achieving individuals all share a trait that she calls <em>grit</em>, or the “passion and perseverance” to strive relentlessly day in and day out, often in the face of great difficulty and failure, to achieve a goal. “In sum, no matter the domain, the highly successful had a kind of ferocious determination that played out in two ways. First, these exemplars were unusually resilient and hardworking. Second, they knew in a very, very deep way what they wanted. They not only had determination, they had direction. It was this combination of passion and perseverance that made high achievers special. In a word, they had grit.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>So what does this mean for you? Start from the idea that grit is a character trait like any other, that it can be nurtured and developed as long as you understand its four key elements: interest, practice, purpose, and hope.&nbsp;</p>
