Idea Box

Give conservative recruiters a wide berth!

Do political opinions interfere in the recruitment process? The two studies below demonstrate that a predilection for the status quo gives rise to subtle forms of m when making new hires. Who are the victims? Women.

Recruiters who say that they are politically conservative are inclined to present leadership positions more negatively to female candidates and to be more anxious at the prospect of meeting a woman than her male counterpart. Although these biases are unconscious and are not blatant, they do limit the number of women who hold leadership positions.
What can be done to mitigate these biases?

  • Circulate research articles that show the correlation between women in leadership positions and good organizational performance; these will help take the anxiety out of dismantling the status quo.
  • Use recruitment tools that eliminate any references to gender when looking at applications: the recruiter will then only see the results of the different work-skills tests.
  • Use software designed to identify any writing biases to re-check the job description.

Discriminations are still present and are becoming harder to detect. It’s an ongoing struggle!
