How can learning and performance be reconciled?

“Despite millions spent on training, surveys show that the majority of workers are disengaged and delivering far less than they are capable of,” says Paul Matthews, an expert in learning and former director of a NASDAQ-quoted global IT company. How can learning and performance be reconciled? The author recommends harnessing informal learning or, rather, the processes that put employees in a position of ongoing informal learning (collaboration and the sharing of experiences and best practices). Drawing on numerous examples from leading companies (with a special emphasis on the IT sector), he shows that the L&D function is changing. The challenge is to overcome the obstacles to new forms of knowledge transfer and acquisition in companies by expanding, for example, the use of Web 2.0 tools.
