Little Find

Are you one of life’s organizer’s? Well, now’s the time to take a gamble!

Chaos and uncertainty are a trial for our brains, which strive to find order and reason everywhere they look. Your initial instinct is often to break complexity down into smaller parts, and to sift through, organize and prioritize your ideas so you can come up with a plan of action.

And yet, this natural instinct to introduce a bit more order into things isn’t suited to complicated situations. It puts you at ease at first, but prevents you from leveraging the situation to the full. The anxiety you’ll probably feel when you’re surrounded by uncertainty is ultimately a helpful signal: it should prompt you to take a lighter touch and take on a more playful mindset, however offbeat the idea may seem.
Instead of prioritizing binary choices such as good / bad or yes / no, this subtlety leaves room for creative thinking and development. Jessica Creane is a game designer, and when she feels she can’t come to a decision and is tempted to stick with the status quo, she plays: “If a velociraptor came and gobbled me up in five seconds, what would I regret not having done?” The unlikely nature of the hypothesis lightens the mood and opens up the boundaries of what is possible. And the game works even better in a group; so test the “What if…” exercise with your colleagues! Pluck up the courage to tackle important matters without being so serious!
