Interview

Another year wiser with thought leader Navi Radjou

2019 looks to be a big year for Business Digest advisory committee member Navi Radjou. It will be the year he finishes his next book, Conscious Society, on compassionate and sustainable communities, and the year that he relaunches his highly acclaimed book Frugal Innovation in India and France.

Indian-French-American innovation and leadership expert Navi Radjou became a member of Business Digest’s advisory committee in 2012. This was the same year that, ahead of the curve, we covered his first book, Jugaad Innovation: Think Frugal, Be Flexible, Generate Breakthrough Growth (co-authored with Jaideep Prabhu and Simone Ahuja, Jossey-Bass, April 2012). Jugaad Innovation went on to become a global bestseller, with over 100,000 copies sold worldwide.

The following year (2013), Navi spoke at our 43rd HR Lab here in Paris on the phenomenon of jugaad – “a Hindi word for improvised solutions born out of ingenuity in resource-constrained settings” – or how companies can turn adversity into opportunity and innovate faster, cheaper, and better. Navi then went on to give a TED Talk on the subject of jugaad and frugal innovation in 2014, which has been viewed over 1.7 million times and counting. This year, in September 2018, we had the honor and pleasure of welcoming Navi back to speak at our 55th HR Lab on how leaders can cultivate wisdom in the age of AI, the subject of both his 2016 book From Smart to Wise and his forthcoming book Conscious Society (2019).

Born and raised in Pondicherry, India, Navi studied at Ecole Central Paris and now lives in Palo Alto, California. Whether in his work as a celebrated author, regular Harvard Business Review, MIT Sloan Management Review, and strategy+business contributor, Cambridge fellow, or keynote speaker, Navi’s thought leadership is indelibly shaped by his “Indian roots, French education, and current Silicon Valley milieu.” As a member of our advisory committee, Navi is an inexhaustible source of insight and inspiration, always at the ready with a fascinating idea, angle, or recommendation, when we cover his areas of expertise: innovation and leadership. We look forward to seeing and celebrating along with him what 2019 has in store!
