4 rules to follow to inspire trust

You’re the person holding the power, who referees disagreements and who, in the event of a crisis, may be called on to make tough decisions for the good of your team. All in all, it’s a potentially delicate position. And trust is the glue that holds everyone together.

1. You are the role model 

You have a key role to play in laying the foundations for trust inside your team. 

  • Exemplary character: Your behavior sets the tone in your organization – your employees will tend to base their behaviors on yours. If you’re open, attentive and willing to delegate, you’ll send them signals that promote trust.  
  • Ambivalence: Your decision-making authority can help move your group forward positively, but it can also isolate you, inflate your ego and potentially increase your mistrust. Be careful not to shut yourself up in an ivory tower.  
  • Accountability: Take responsibility for your actions, but also accept responsibility for those of your predecessors (at least in part). The way you handle the situation you’ve inherited (including the mistakes) says a great deal about you in the eyes of your teammates. 
  • Perseverance: The support of your teams (and, even more so, your customers) is never set in stone. It‘s constantly renewed (or not!) as and when you make your decisions. 
  • Desire: Hold on to your enthusiasm and sense of the collective, as these are key qualities for ensuring lasting buy-in.
